What is Chu Seong-ju?
Designated as the 22nd Master of Korean Foods, Jesepalseonju, also known as Shinsunju, is a traditional, renowned liquor from Damyang.
It is aged with domestically grown rice and 11 medicinal herbs, including wolfberry, magnolia berry, and mulberry.
It is a distilled liquor with an alcohol content of 25%. Your eyes will appreciate its golden color, your nose will smell its unique, gentle aroma, and your tongue will experience its deep flavor that stimulates all five senses. This traditional liquor is a must-try.
Origin of Chuseongju
There are three main stories about the origin of Chuseongju. First, at the millennium-old temple Yeondongsa in Damyang, the monks enjoyed the medicinal liquor as a meal.
A wildcat, delighted by its delicious taste, stole it. As the supply of food continued to decrease, the monks investigated the cause. Lee Yeong-gan, a student at the temple, was suspected of the culprit.
He caught the wildcat, punished it, and received a secret weapon in its stead, earning him a government position. Second, at Myeonangjeong in Damyang, the birthplace of lyric poetry, the mid-Joseon Dynasty scholar-official Song Soon held a banquet featuring Chuseongjuyakju to celebrate the 60th anniversary of his passing the state examination.
The drink was so delicious and hangover-free that word spread all the way to Hanyang, where it became a renowned liquor of the Joseon Dynasty.
Thirdly, Jeon Woo-chi, known to be from the Damyang Jeon clan, is known as a scholar who lived in seclusion in the wilderness after the Gimyo Incident and died young.
However, Jeon Woo-chi's Chuseongju is nearly identical to Lee Yeong-gan's Chuseongju story. As a child, he entered Yeondongsa Temple to study. When the monks' brewed liquor went missing, he was suspected of this. He caught a fox drinking it and received a secret plan.
It is said that he gained Taoist magic through this book, and with that power, he stole a gold beam from the Ming Dynasty palace, and returned it to Damyang as a swallow. This is also known as the Legend of Jeon Woochi.
